It was one of two rescues in that area last week.

Around 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, calls came into to dispatchers that someone had fallen in an area near the Upper Town Wall.

Sky Valley Fire and a technical rescue team from Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue arrived and immediately went to work on a high-angle rescue.

Two days earlier, on Thursday, a 47-year-old woman was climbing on the Index Wall Buttress, when she also fell and was badly hurt.

It took some time for crews to reach her, due to poor cell phone signals.

But once they arrived, a response team came up with a strategy to reach her, sending one technical rescue team to the top of the cliff, to lower rescuers down.

They also sent a firefighter who is an avid sport climber up from the base of the wall to the victim.

The firefighter who climbed up from the bottom reached her first and began medical care.

Shortly after, a litter basket and a rescue technician from Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue were lowered down from the top.

Once reaching the injured climber, they secured a series of ropes, then dropped her down about 20 feet to the ground, where paramedics and additional rescuers were waiting.

The woman suffered knee and head injuries and was reported to be in stable condition.

In a statement posted on X by Sky Valley Fire officials, a spokesperson wrote:

We are fortunate that our Rope Rescue team trains frequently on this exact rock face and carried out the rescue safe and efficiently. Additionally, this is a huge story of where realistic training, trust and collaboration with mutual partners paid off for successful completion of a very technical high angle rescue.”

Hundreds decry Trump policies in nationwide “Day of Protest” /local/hundreds-decry-trump-policies-in-nationwide-day-of-protest/4077818 Sat, 19 Apr 2025 21:16:23 +0000 /?p=4077818 Hundreds of people publicly denounced policies laid out by President Trump Saturday, taking part in a National “Day of Protest” that included dozens of cities here in Washington state.

In Seattle, a protest and march blocked traffic on Broadway East and East Pine.

A photo posted by the city’s Department of Transportation shows dozens of protesters in the middle of the normally-busy thoroughfare, holding protest signs and blocking cars, trucks and Metro buses.

The march followed a “We the People Means Everyone” rally at Seattle Central College sponsored by Capitol Hill Pride.

Other events, including flag-waving from overpasses, were scheduled to take place in many Seattle neighborhoods, including North Aurora in Shoreline, an I-5 overpass in the University District, and at various parks and other locations in Lake City, Ballard, Fremont, Green Lake, Queen Anne, Maple Leaf, Lake Forest Park and West Seattle.

Activists were also scheduled to take part in protests in Tukwila, Lynnwood, Tacoma, Kirkland, Bothell, Des Moines, Fife, Renton, Federal Way and Poulsbo.

One of the groups organizing the protests is called “Evergreen Resistance.”

Leaders of the group says it is the Washington chapter of the “50501” movement, which is partnering with other groups around the state in protests against the Trump administration.

The 50501 movement is an abbreviation of “50 protests, 50 states, one movement,” a grassroots political organization created to protest the policies and actions of the second Donald Trump term.

50501 organized major demonstrations on February 5th and February 17th.

Another protest was held on March 4th.

“Hands Off!” protests were held on April 5th, while the “Day of Protest” was slated for Saturday, April 19th.

Other protests considered to be part of the movement were scheduled for Olympia, Tacoma, Everett, Bremerton, Yakima, Whidbey Island, Vancouver and Spokane.

One of the pedestrians was knocked unconscious by the impact of the collision Friday evening.

Around 8:20 p.m., police say someone riding a red motorcycle failed to stop at a crosswalk on Martin Luther King Jr. Way at South Alaska St.

The bike hit a 59-year-old man and 57-year-old woman.

When police arrived, they found the woman unconscious and in critical condition.

Emergency responders say she suffered significant trauma to the head.

Medics from the Seattle Fire Department arrived soon after and provided medical treatment for the two victims.

A crew from American Medical Response transported the man to Harborview Medical Center, in stable condition.

A Seattle Fire Department ambulance took the unconscious woman to Harborview.

According to the collision investigation team reviewing the circumstances of the accident, the motorcyclist was going southbound on M.L. King Jr. when he slammed into the two people walking in the crosswalk.

So far, police have not identified the motorcyclist.

They are asking for help finding the person.

Police say the motorcyclist ran from the scene of the accident.

The police department says detectives with its Traffic Collision Investigation Squad have been assigned to the investigation into the crash.

They are asking anyone with information about the crash, or the identity or location of the person riding the motorcycle, to call 911 right away.

Liquid egg products recalled due to possible cleaning solution contamination /local/liquid-egg-products-recalled-due-to-possible-cleaning-solution-contamination/4069480 Sat, 29 Mar 2025 20:09:53 +0000 /?p=4069480 A recall is underway for a liquid egg product because it might contain a cleaning solution chemical.

It’s unclear if the product was sold in Washington state.

But the U.S. Agriculture Department advises you should check your refrigerator for a liquid egg product sold under the brand names “Egg Beaters” and “Bob Evans Better’n Eggs”.

The products are made by Cargill Kitchen Solutions of Lake Odessa, Michigan.

The recall involves more than 212,000 lbs. of liquid egg products.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Friday the product could contain sodium hypochlorite, which is used in a cleaning solution.

The liquid egg items were produced on March 12 and 13, 2025.

Here is a list of the products that are involved in the recall:

  • 32-oz. (2-lb.) carton containing “egg beaters ORIGINAL LIQUID EGG SUBSTITUTE” with a “Use By” date of AUG 10 2025.
  • 32-oz. (2-lb.) carton containing “egg beaters CAGE-FREE ORIGINAL LIQUID EGG SUBSTITUTE” with a “Use By” date of AUG 09 2025.
  • 32-oz. (2-lb.) carton containing “egg beaters CAGE-FREE ORIGINAL FROZEN EGG SUBSTITUTE” and “egg beaters NO ENJAULADAS ORIGINAL SUSTITUTO DE HUEVO CONGELADO” with a “Use By” date of MAR 07 2026.
  • 32-oz. (2-lb.) carton containing “Bob Evans Better’n Eggs Made with Real Egg Whites” with a “Use By” date of AUG 10 2025.

Each of these products can also be identified with an establishment number that is ink-jetted on the carton that reads, “G1804.”

The company believes the products were shipped to distributors in Ohio and Texas.  They were then sent to supermarkets and food outlets in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois and Iowa.

But according to the USDA’s FSIS, it is also possible some of the products were shipped around the rest of the country.

Food safety experts say the possible contamination was discovered when FSIS received a tip about the problem.   Officials conducted an investigation and did a thorough assessment of the contents of the cleaning solution.

Government scientists have come to the conclusion that using the products should not cause adverse health consequences.  Since they believe the health risk is “negligible,” the FSIS issued what is called a “Class III” recall.

Authorities say, so far, they have not received any confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the products.

But they emphasize that anyone who is concerned about an illness should check with a healthcare provider.

Officials say it’s possible the contaminated liquid egg product could be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.

They say, if a product is found, it should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

If you have questions about food safety, you can call a USDA toll-free Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854).

You can also send questions by email, to MPHotline@usda.gov.

If you’d like to report a concern about any meat, poultry, or egg product, the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can be accessed 24 hours a day, at

Washington Dept. of Children, Youth & Families sued over child left in hot car /local/washington-dept-of-children-youth-families-sued-over-child-left-in-hot-car/4066800 Sun, 23 Mar 2025 19:01:51 +0000 /?p=4066800 A lawsuit filed against the Washington State Department of Children, Youth & Families accuses the agency of negligence, after a one-year-old boy who was left in a hot car died.

The child died in May of 2023.

The lawsuit claims his foster mother forgot about him and left him in the back seat of her car for close to nine hours.

Authorities found the unresponsive child in a parking lot at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup where she worked.

According to the , a lawsuit filed on behalf of the child’s estate claims the department knew, or should have known, the boy was placed in a foster home that was neglectful and “posed dangers to his health and safety.”

Steven Kopp, the child that died, was left in the car on a day that temperatures reached the 70s, according to the lawsuit filed March 14th.

Court documents filed by the plaintiff claim officials at DCYF had received “information indicating the potential occurrence of abuse and neglect” at the foster home.  The lawsuit alleges the state agency responsible for protecting children failed in its duties, by not removing the child from the home.

The News Tribune reported attempts to contact lawyers representing the estate were unsuccessful.

A spokesperson for DCYF also declined to comment, since the agency’s policy is not to speak about pending litigation.

After the boy’s death, the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the incident was an accident.  The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s office chose not to file criminal charges at the time.

In a memo dated July 30th, Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney Mary Robnett wrote, “there is no concern that the foster mother will commit this type of act again herself, and criminalizing her tragic mistake will not deter others from making similar future mistakes.”

Robnett also said, based on the circumstances of the case and other legal precedents, a conviction was not likely.

“There is no concern that the foster mother will commit this type of act again herself, and criminalizing her tragic mistake will not deter others from making similar future mistakes,” Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney Mary Robnett said in July 30 memo.

She also noted that a conviction was unlikely based on the circumstances and prior precedent.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the incident should be considered a tragic accident.  She said it was clear the boy was left in the car by mistake, and his 47-year-old foster mother had taken complete responsibility for his tragic death.

Robnett added that when the incident happened and the boy was left unattended, the foster mother was exhausted, recovering from a bout with COVID-19, and was nervous about a new job she was taking on as a case manager.

Investigators say the foster mother was on her way to work when she dopped off several children at different locations and intended to take the one-year-old to a daycare.

The foster mother also explained to them that three other factors were involved:  a change in her usual routine, anxiety over being late to work, and being distracted by colleagues in the parking lot.

Puyallup police reported interviews with the first-time foster parents after the boy’s death were “heartbreaking.”

The family is not being identified because there have not been charged with a crime.

Attorneys representing the child’s estate claim in the lawsuit that DCYF failed to act act on issues that were purportedly present after the couple was licensed.

Court documents allege “over the course of the following year, the (foster parents) repeatedly demonstrated a lack of familiarity with procedures and requirements of foster care under Washington Law, violated health and safety protocols for the care of a foster child, and showed clear signs of exhaustion and burn-out as well as a lack of communication, all concerning child safety factors that were known to DCYF yet ignored by DCYF.”

The legal complaint filed by the boy’s estate has not specified any damages being sought by the plaintiffs.

Big two-alarm fire at auto salvage yard in Kent challenges fire crews /local/big-two-alarm-fire-at-auto-salvage-yard-in-kent-challenges-fire-crews/4063627 Sun, 16 Mar 2025 22:08:11 +0000 /?p=4063627 A big fire at an auto wrecking yard near Kent took hours to put out Sunday.

The fire broke out around 1:15 a.m. Sunday, at Binford Metals in Kent, an auto salvage business on 78th Ave. S., just east of SR 167.

The first calls to 911 came in reporting a vehicle fire.

But fire crews soon learned it was more than just one vehicle.

“While en route, it was obvious that it was more than that, just by looking at the thermal column,” said Puget Sound Fire Spokesperson Pat Pawlak.  “When firefighters arrived they found several vehicles on fire and these vehicles had already been smashed down and stacked up maybe eight to ten feet high.”

All those tall stacks of crushed cars, trucks and SUVs gave the fire plenty of nooks and crannies in which to spread, making it a tough fire to battle.

Crews quickly upgraded it to a two-alarm fire and called out for help from neighboring fire departments, including Valley Regional Fire Authority, South King Fire & Rescue, King County Medic One, Zone Three Fire Cadets.

The Port of Seattle also dispatched a crash vehicle crew to deploy fire-extinguishing foam onto the flames.

Puget Sound Fire officials posted .

“When you start looking at these stacks of cars, it’s row after row after row,” Pawlak said.  “And you can’t get back in between the rows either.  Plus it’s very dangerous, given the fact that it’s 1:00 in the morning.  It’s also dark outside, so you’re at a disadvantage.  Obviously, our number one concern is the safety of our firefighters and safety of any of the workers that are there.”

Firefighters contacted the owners of the business and they soon arrived at the fire scene.

It’s unclear whether the crews were concerned about flammable or toxic liquids, such as gasoline, oil, or brake or power steering fluid the vehicles had once contained.

“It’s really hard to tell, because they typically drain these vehicles of all the fluids before they crush them,” Pawlak said.

The fire also spread to a nearby outbuilding.  The flames destroyed a metal-constructed shop.  Damage from the fire caused its roof to collapse.

Pawlak says the structure was a complete loss and will have to be demolished.

At around 4:30 or 5:00 a.m., after several hours had passed trying to put out the flames, crews developed a new strategy.

The asked the business to use an excavator to pull apart burning vehicles so they could get at the still smoldering and burning vehicles and in the unreachable areas where the flames had spread.

Someone from the salvage company operated the heavy machinery.

“It was picking up one car at a time.  They would hold it and if there were any hot spots we would extinguish it,” Pawlak said.  “So really it wasn’t where they were picking cars out of a pile that was on fire.  It was primarily hitting the hot spots.”

Luckily, no one was injured.

One big question is, on such a wet, rainy night, how did the piles of crushed cars ignite?

That’s what investigators will try to determine in the coming days.

Since the business is located in unincorporated King County, the sheriff’s office will do the probe into the cause.

“Until they get a chance to complete their investigation it would be hard to say what the cause was,” Pawlak said.

Remembering former Sonics legend Slick Watts, dead at 73 /local/sonics-legend-slick-watts-dies-at-73/4063324 Sun, 16 Mar 2025 18:04:22 +0000 /?p=4063324 A northwest basketball legend and former Seattle Supersonic Slick Watts has died at age 73.

Watts earned his nickname, “Slick,” due to his shaved head and trademark headband.

The former basketball star with a contagious, endearing smile also ran a basketball academy with his son, Donald Watts, who played for the University of Washington Huskies and Lake Washington High School.

Donald continues to run the Watts Basketball training academy founded by his father, and honored his dad Saturday with a : “You did so much for so many of us. It was an honor to call you pops.” Donald also posted pictures of himself with his father, including one taken from a hospital room.

Watts suffered a debilitating a stroke in 2021, and has had other health issues since that year.

How Slick Watts became a legend

According to the , his hard work and showmanship led to an offer from then-coach Bill Russell to sign him as an undrafted rookie. His rookie salary was a mere $19,000.

Russell was quoted as saying, “I don’t know why I kept him.”

Slick Watts became a beloved player of Seattle Supersonic fans and played for the Sonics from 1973 to 1978, before he was traded to the then-New Orleans Jazz, midway through the 1977-78 season.

The point guard topped the National Basketball Association in both assists and steals per game during the 1975-76 season.

Seattle traded him just one year before the Sonics made back-to-back trips to the NBA Finals, losing to the Washington Bullets the first year, then winning the championship against the same team in 1979.

Post-retirement, Slick Watts became a PE teacher in Seattle

After retiring from the NBA, Watts became even more involved in the community, becoming a teacher of physical education at elementary and high schools in the Seattle School District.

He spent several decades as a teacher before leaving that career in 2017.

Slick Watts was also known for his support of other basketball organizations in the northwest, often attending games for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm and University of Washington basketball.

He was considered a basketball ambassador for the city of Seattle, representing the Sonics at events and rallies even after 2008, when the Sonics were transplanted to the Midwest with a move to Oklahoma City.

The Watts basketball legacy continues in the northwest even after Slick’s passing.

His grandson Isaiah is a Cougar and just finished his second season playing basketball at Washington State University, while his granddaughter Jadyn has played for two seasons as a Western Washington University Viking.

Three people killed in wrong-way crash on I-5 in south Thurston County /local/three-people-killed-in-wrong-way-crash-on-i-5-in-south-thurston-county/4063569 Sun, 16 Mar 2025 17:22:03 +0000 /?p=4063569 The Washington State Patrol reports a horrific crash on northbound I-5 that took three lives Sunday morning was caused by a driving going the wrong way on the freeway.

It happened around 6 a.m. at Scatter Creek, at milepost 91, just north of the Grand Mound area.

Investigators say three vehicles were involved in two separate collisions, but the three people killed all died in the initial head-on crash.

Both vehicles involved in the first collision blocked the roadway after the impact.

Police say after that, the driver of a third vehicle could not stop in time to avoid hitting one of the two blocking cars.

The crash blocked all lanes of northbound I-5, and the state patrol asked northbound drivers to proceed slowly through the area.

The state patrol detoured traffic through the Scatter Creek rest area.

The southbound lanes were not affected.

Medics, fire crews, an Incident Response Team and state troopers all responded to the crash.

Investigators say the driver of the third vehicle was not impaired and not seriously hurt.

The state patrol says it will release other information about the crash as the investigation continues.

President Trump orders strikes on Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen and issues new warning /ap/president-trump-orders-strikes-on-iran-backed-houthi-rebels-in-yemen-and-issues-new-warning/4063310 Sat, 15 Mar 2025 20:17:03 +0000 /?p=4063310 WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump said he ordered a series of airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Saturday, promising to use “overwhelming lethal force” until Iranian-backed Houthi revels cease their attacks on shipping along a vital maritime corridor. The Houthis said nine civilians were killed.

“Our brave Warfighters are right now carrying out aerial attacks on the terrorists’ bases, leaders, and missile defenses to protect American shipping, air, and naval assets, and to restore Navigational Freedom,” Trump said in a social media post. “No terrorist force will stop American commercial and naval vessels from freely sailing the Waterways of the World.”

He also warned Iran to stop supporting the rebel group, promising to hold the country “fully accountable” for the actions of its proxy. It comes two weeks after the U.S leader sent a letter to Iranian leaders offering a path to restarting bilateral talks between the countries on Iran’s advancing nuclear weapons program that Trump has said he will not allow to become operational.

The Houthis reported a series of explosions in their territory Saturday evening. Images circulating online showed plumes of black smoke over the area of the Sanaa airport complex, which includes a sprawling military facility.

At least nine people were killed, said Anees al-Asbahi, spokesman for the Houthi-run health ministry. In a statement on social media, he said another nine were wounded.

Nasruddin Amer, deputy head of the Houthi media office, said the airstrikes won’t deter them and they would retaliate against the U.S. “Sanaa will remain Gaza’s shield and support and will not abandon it no matter the challenges,” he added on social media.

The airstrikes come a few days after the Houthis said they would resume attacks on Israeli vessels sailing in waters off Yemen in response to Israel’s blockade on Gaza. There have been no Houthi attacks reported since then.

Earlier this month, Israel halted all aid coming into Gaza and warned of “additional consequences” for Hamas if their fragile ceasefire in the war isn’t extended as negotiations continue over starting a second phase.

The Houthis had described their warning as taking hold in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Arabian Sea.

The Houthis targeted over 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two vessels and killing four sailors, during their campaign targeting military and civilian ships between the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in late 2023 and January of this year, when a tenuous ceasefire in Gaza took effect.

The attacks raised the Houthis’ profile as they faced economic problems and launched a crackdown targeting dissent and aid workers at home amid Yemen’s decade-long stalemated war that’s torn apart the Arab world’s poorest nation.

The Houthi media office said the U.S. strikes hit “a residential neighborhood” in Sanaa’s northern district of Shouab. Sanaa residents said at least four airstrikes rocked the Eastern Geraf neighborhood in Shouab district, terrifying women and children in the area.

“The explosions were very strong,” said Abdallah al-Alffi. “It was like an earthquake.”

The United States, Israel and Britain have previously hit Houthi-held areas in Yemen. Israel’s military declined to comment.

Saturday’s operation against the Houthis was conducted solely by the U.S., according to a U.S. official. It was the first strike on the Yemen-based Houthis under the second Trump administration, and it comes after a period of relative quiet in the region.

Such broad-based and pre-planned missile strikes against the Houthis were done multiple times by the Biden administration in response to frequent attacks by the Houthis against commercial and military vessels in the region.

The USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group, which includes the carrier, three Navy destroyers and one cruiser, are in the Red Sea and were part of the mission. The USS Georgia cruise missile submarine has also been operating in the region.

Trump announced the strikes as he spent the day at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“These relentless assaults have cost the U.S. and World Economy many BILLIONS of Dollars while, at the same time, putting innocent lives at risk,” Trump said.

Snowy conditions at Snoqualmie Pass causes spinouts, jackknifed semi /pacific-northwest-weather/snowy-conditions-at-snoqualmie-pass-causes-spinouts-jackknifed-semi/4063300 Sat, 15 Mar 2025 20:01:59 +0000 /?p=4063300 Slick and treacherous conditions on Snoqualmie Pass Saturday morning made driving tough for people trying to make it through the Washington Cascades.

The slippery pavement caused a semi to jackknife and several other vehicle spinouts, resulting in lanes of I-90 briefly blocked.

The Washington State Patrol reports a Washington Department of Transportation road grader pulled the stuck semi out of the way, keeping most lanes of travel open on the freeway.

“It was definitely winter driving conditions and we had some spinouts and jackknifed semis, which caused a delay for the plows to keep going,” said Washington State Trooper Rick Johnson.  “Fortunately, they were able to do an awesome job and keep the roadway open.”

A WSDOT road grader was able to pull this jackknifed semi out of the lanes of travel, after its driver lost control on I-90 Saturday morning. (Photo: Washington State Patrol)

Chains were required for all vehicles traveling over Snoqulamie Pass on Saturday morning.  It is unclear whether the driver of the jackknifed semi had installed chains on his rig.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Washington Cascades that is effective at least through 11 a.m. Sunday.  It says you can expect hazardous weather conditions, especially on the western slopes of the North Cascades and mountain passes.

“There will be more snow coming, so we want people to be aware and be prepared for that,” Johnson said.  “If you’re not comfortable driving in those conditions, postpone your trip and go at a different time.”

Compact snow and ice is expected to remain on I-90 througout the weekend, making driving a dicey proposition, especially for those not used to driving on snow and ice.

“They lose traction and slide a little bit and get into a position where they can’t get themselves out of it,” said Trooper Johnson.  “When you get severe conditions, even chaining up, you get vehicles that are unable to move.”

Forecasters expect rain and snow in the mountains throughout the weekend, and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the evening.  They predict more rain and snow early Sunday, midnight, with the snow level at about 2,000 feet.  An accumulation of two to five inches is possible on Sunday alone, with a total accumulation of six to 16 inches expected by Monday.

Exactly the kind of weather, says Trooper Johnson, that for some, makes more sense to not even try to drive in the mountains.

“If you’re not comfortable or don’t have experience trying to drive in those conditions, we kindly ask that you postpone your trip,” he said.  “For those that need to travel, make sure and adhere to restrictions.  Those are in place specifically to make it possible to keep the pass open.  Because if we get a spinout or a jackknifed semi that blocks any part of the freeway, then the plows can’t continue to do the great job they do by keeping that roadway passable.”

Fortunately, none of the spinouts the state patrol responded to Saturday morning resulted in serious injuries or fatalities.

But the state patrol urges drivers, if they must make the trip, to drive slowly and cautiously.

“Ice and slippery conditions don’t really care if you have 18-wheel drive or four-wheel drive,” Johnson said.  “All-wheel drive is great, but it still requires you to adjust your speed, because you can get going better, but stopping is no different than in any other vehicle.”

Tukwila crash suspect charged; Investigators release details of collision aftermath /local/sr-599-tukwila-crash/4060239 Wed, 12 Mar 2025 00:09:58 +0000 /?p=4060239 King County prosecutors have charged the man accused of running away after his SUV careened off a State Route 599 (SR 599) overpass and landed onto Interstate 5 (I-5).

Daud Mohamud was arrested on Friday following the crash that killed one and injured four others in Tukwila.

Charging papers state Mohamud has had more than 35 traffic infractions since 2013, plus three warrants issued since 2017.

Mohamud now faces a slew of new charges, including felony hit and run and driving with a suspended license.

Suspect in Tukwila crash skips court appearance

Mohamud skipped his first scheduled appearance before a judge. A defense attorney was there to speak on his behalf.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is continuing its investigation into the crash and has asked other witnesses to come forward. The agency said that on Friday at 10:15 a.m., the suspected driver lost control of a 2013 Toyota Highlander, and it plunged off the SR 599 overpass and onto I-5.

The Highlander hit three other vehicles, but no one in those vehicles suffered major injuries.

Investigators believe a passenger in the SUV was ejected from the vehicle as it flew off the overpass and was killed.

Moments before man suspected of Tukwila crash arrested

Investigators said it appears the driver was unconscious for a short time, but then woke up and tried to run away from the scene. Police said the 30-year-old suspect was not wearing shoes but had socks on. Officers also said he was covered in blood and ran into the woods.

A state patrol sergeant responding on the SR 599 overpass noted the unconscious person on the overpass had woken up and fled on foot.

He said a man in black clothing exited the tree line. The sergeant asked him if he was OK and the suspect told him he just needed to get to his sister. The trooper could tell, based on his injuries, that he had been involved in the collision and planned to take him back to the scene to be checked by medics.

Before putting the suspect in his vehicle, the officer conducted a pat down for weapons and felt what he assumed to be a wallet. The sergeant then opened his patrol car door, but the man refused to get in.

The suspect then stated he felt like he was going to throw up and asked to go to the bushes. The officer watched as the suspect walked to the bushes and then removed his hand from his pocket and threw his wallet. Officers recovered the wallet and determined the suspect’s identity.

Police said not only was the suspect in his stocking feet, but one of his toes was sticking out of the sock and a portion of the toe was missing. Investigators asked what kind of shoes he was wearing that day, and he stated he was wearing black Crocs. Detectives looked inside the vehicle and observed a pair of black Crocs in the driver’s side footwell.

The sergeant then went back to his patrol vehicle, read the suspect his rights and advised him that he was under arrest for hit-and-run. At that point, the suspect told officers he was not driving and that his friend, who had died in the crash, was behind the wheel. He said he had picked up his friend at his house near South 216th and then let him drive the SUV.

The suspect claimed he was in the back seat but had left his shoes in the driver’s seat area.

At Saturday’s preliminary hearing, a judge found probable cause for felony hit and run, an ignition interlock violation, and driving with a suspended license in the second degree. The judge did not find probable cause for vehicular homicide.

The court set the suspect’s bail at $100,000.

Police, firefighters escort horses to Puyallup fairgrounds during medical emergency /local/police-firefighters-escort-horses-to-puyallup-fairgrounds-during-medical-emergency/4059801 Sat, 08 Mar 2025 23:01:00 +0000 /?p=4059801 A couple of horses that clip-clopped their way through downtown Puyallup were not an early edition of the Washington State Fair’s Rodeo Parade.

A family transporting three horses from Monroe to a farm in Yelm says one of them, a horse named Atlas, had some kind of accident in the trailer Saturday and couldn’t move.

They pulled into a parking lot on Pioneer Way and flagged down an officer.

Someone called the fairgrounds and asked if they could bring the two other horses there, while Atlas was taken to a vet.

Before long, Puyallup police officers, a Central Pierce Fire and Rescue crew and one of the owners could be seen walking Atlas’s two stablemates, named Boris and Kenney, to the fairgrounds on foot.

Some Puyallup residents may have thought the Washington State Fair Rodeo Parade was happening a few months early when these two horses, Boris and Kenney, were escorted by police and firefighters through town to reach the fairgrounds Saturday. (Photo: Puyallup Police Dept.)

Soon after, Boris and Kenney were enjoying a nice lunch courtesy of the Washington State Fair.

Police posted a description of the unusual .

The post the officers reported “it was quite the sight to see and there were lots of smiles along the way.”

And it was a first for at least one of the officers on patrol:

One of the police officers involved in this today is brand new to our agency. We told him it was a ‘Puyallup thing.’  Thank you to the Washington State Fair for jumping into action to help today along with Central Pierce Fire & Rescue!  Kenney and Boris are enjoying lunch at the fair as we speak.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Atlas and the family hoping for a full and speedy recovery!”

Street racing may have caused crash that injured eight people /local/street-racing-may-have-caused-crash-that-injured-eight-people/4055876 Mon, 03 Mar 2025 12:55:13 +0000 /?p=4055876 A two-car crash that injured eight people, three of whom are in critical condition, may have been caused by two cars street racing.

The Seattle Police Department’s Traffic Collision Investigative Squad told Xվ7 T-V that just before the collision, around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, an Acura sedan was racing another car in the southbound lanes of Seattle’s Westlake Avenue North.

That’s when it’s believed the Acura veered into oncoming traffic and hit a Ford Explorer head on.

The crash occurred about a quarter mile east of the Aurora Avenue Bridge.

Seattle Fire spokesperson Kaila Lafferty says there were five people in the Acura and three in the Ford Explorer.

“Our crews responding on the scene noticed a large number of patients and immediately upgraded it to a Multiple Casualty Incident,” Lafferty said.

Firefighters ended up tearing the roof off the Acura to reach two people trapped inside.

“When they started triaging the patients they realized two of the patients were trapped.  They needed to be extricated,” she said.

The Seattle Police Department’s Traffic Collision Investigative Team is working to piece together what led to the crash.

Medics transported all eight patients to Harborview Medical Center.

Because of the number of victims and the upgrade to a Multiple Casualty Incident response, the Seattle Fire Department deployed close to 40 firefighter/EMTs and paramedics to the scene, along with support and command staff.

So far, investigators have not concluded whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash, but officers told Xվ7 the driver of the sedan “appeared to be impaired.”

It’s also unclear whether the second car involved in the alleged street-racing incident has been identified.

“When the first responding crew rolled up to the scene and sees two vehicles with so many patients it’s instantly, how can we most effectively treat these patients, first off, the most-critically-injured patients and get them to a hospital to be treated by doctors as quickly and as efficiently as possible,” Lafferty said.

‘I would’ve taken his place any day’: Tacoma couple remembers son shot, killed on Valentine’s Day /crime_blotter/i-wouldve-taken-his-place-any-day-tacoma-couple-remembers-son-shot-killed-on-valentines-day/4046892 Sat, 15 Feb 2025 22:30:38 +0000 /?p=4046892 A Tacoma couple is remembering their son after he was shot and killed on Valentine’s Day.

Tacoma police are searching for at least one suspect after a reported shooting on South G Street in Tacoma Friday at about 1 a.m.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

“He only stepped out a few hours and it cost him his life,” said Chanel Jackson, mother.

Jackson told that her son, Kadony Robbins, 18, was hanging out with some friends at a gathering at his girlfriend’s mother’s home.

When things got a little rowdy outside, her son tried to deescalate the situation and told everyone to go home, she said.

Moments later, her son was shot and killed.

A neighbor told Xվ 7 News that the shooting happened outside of the apartment building.

The parents told us that they believe the suspects are children.

“I’m hearing they’re 15 and 16 years old,” said Josh Holdway, stepfather. “He was so young. He was 18. He was only 18 for three months. He didn’t even get a chance to start life.”

“There’s going to be a lot of different people affected and hurt by this, his friends, his girlfriend, his classmates, the people from his program, his coworkers,” he added.

The parents said their son had a big personality and was very charismatic. While Robbins enjoyed woodwork, his biggest passion in life was rapping, they added.

A friend of the victim shared the following statement with us:

“He was the kindest person you’d meet, he’d always make you laugh or smile no matter how upset or happy you may be it’s like he had a master key to making others around him happy even if he wasn’t doing to well himself. I’ll miss him forever and hope that he gets the justice he deserves,” the friend wrote.

Xվ 7 News reached out to the Tacoma Police Department to get more details about the suspect(s), including their age.

We’re still waiting to hear back.

The mother told Xվ 7 News that she is not angry at the suspect(s).

“It’s not a hurt game because they’re already going to spend the rest of their lives, and I don’t have my son for the rest of my life, so forgiveness is what looks better for me,” she said.

The family said a vigil is scheduled Saturday evening to remember their loved one.

A GoFundMe was created to help the family during this difficult time.

Rescuers save dog after it fell through thin ice at a Kitsap County lake /local/rescuers-save-dog-after-it-fell-through-thin-ice-at-a-kitsap-county-lake/4046826 Sat, 15 Feb 2025 19:13:37 +0000 /?p=4046826 A Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy and a private citizen saved a dog from the icy water of a lake after it fell through thin ice.

The rescue was caught on the deputy’s body cam.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office posted on X.

The video recorded the dog’s yelps as it swam in distress in the chilly waters of Wildcat Lake on Friday.

A neighbor had tried to row out to the helpless animal in a small boat already, but couldn’t get through the ice.

Kitsap County Deputy Chad Miller arrived mintues later to help save the dog.

The dog could be heard yelping and in distress on the deputy's body camera, as the two men worked to reach it in the chilly water. (Photo: Kitsap County Sheriff's Office)

He handed the man in the boat a shovel and asked him to use it as an icebreaker at the front of the small rowboat.

The deputy then grabbed an oar and propelled the boat through the ice to reach the struggling dog.

The dog was too heavy to lift up into the boat from the water.

So when they arrived, the neighbor used a rope to harness the dog.

He wrapped the rope twice around the animal’s neck.

As Deputy Miller rowed backwards through the ice, the rope pulled the dog alongside the boat until they were able to reach the shoreline.

A crew from Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue had also arrived at the scene and helped get the dog safely to shore.

After successfully retrieving the animal, the rescuers got the dog, and themselves, warmed up and out of danger.

Seattle Fire Dept. rule 3-alarm Ballard blaze as ‘undetermined’ as they piece together what happened /local/roof-collapses-in-building-under-construction-during-3-alarm-fire-in-ballard/4043086 Sun, 09 Feb 2025 19:18:32 +0000 /?p=4043086 The roof of a three-story building under construction collapsed during a three-alarm fire in Ballard that also spread to two other buildings. The Seattle Fire Department the case of the fire as “undetermined.”

The fire broke out just before 6:30 a.m. Sunday, near 9th N.W. and N.W. 54th, directly across from the Gilman Playground and soccer fields.

“When firefighters arrived, they reported flames through the roof of this three-story building,” said Seattle Fire Department Spokesperson David Cuerpo.

The fire spread to four units of an eight-unit townhome apartment building next door on the east side of the building under construction.

“Our firefighters worked quickly to evacuate everyone in that building and to make sure everyone was a safe distance from the fire,” Cuerpo said.

Where there any injuries?

One woman in her mid-20s was hurt and medics treated her at the scene. She was not transported to a hospital.

“The third and second floors of the building under construction have completely collapsed and we are maintaining a defensive position for that portion of the fire,” Cuerpo said.

The fire department coordinated with Seattle City Light and Puget Sound Energy to secure natural gas, electricity and water to the buildings.

“About 100 firefighters responded to the scene,” Cuerpo said. “We had multiple fire trucks that had aerial ladders that deploy upwards to gain access to the roof that was on fire of the building that was under construction.”

Those aerial ladder trucks also sprayed water on an adjacent residential building next door.

The fire spread to a third structure—a four-story building under construction to the west. This building lacked a sprinkler system. While the flames damaged its exterior wall, they did not extend into the construction site.

A senior housing facility, situated diagonally from the burning building, was also at risk. Fire crews worked through the morning to prevent the flames from reaching it.
