A police pursuit was called off twice before a deadly wrong-way crash early Thursday morning.
Washington State Troopers reported that around 3 a.m., a trooper attempted to pull over a motorcycle on Interstate 5 in Mount Vernon. The driver fled and exited the freeway. The trooper continued to follow and attempted another stop.
The driver then entered I-5 northbound in the southbound lanes. Shortly after, the motorcycle struck part of the Skagit River Bridge, ejecting the driver, who was then hit by an oncoming semi-truck.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Skagit Smart Team is investigating the incident.
