March 2017 Charity of the Month: Hilltop Artists

Mar 1, 2017, 8:15 AM

...

Hilltop Artists has been named Bonneville Seattle’s Charity of the Month for March, for giving students ages 12 to 20 the chance to explore the glass medium through fusion, mosaics, flameworking, and glassblowing.

Hilltop Artists started in the summer of 1994 with just 20 students. Since then, Hilltop Artists has expanded into 9 different programs that serve over 500 students each year as a tuition-free program that provides instruction, facilities, supplies and materials through grant partnerships, individual and in-kind donations, and glass sales.

Glassblowing requires the students to learn how to plan and execute sequential steps, collaborate with others, and adapt when things don’t go as planned. Research has shown that students who have access to art have better academic and interpersonal success. Hilltop Artists exemplifies this as their students have learned many transferable skills through their glass training.

Hilltop Artists is successful because of many amazing volunteers, sponsors, and various fundraising events and activities. Tacoma Public Schools is one of this charity’s most important partners because they not only provide an in-kind donation of the two Tacoma facilities and their utilities, but also also contribute towards the salaries of our daytime instructors – who teach elective classes at Jason Lee Middle School – and the Career and Technical Education classes at Wilson High School.
