Instead of fireworks lighting up the night sky 鈥 drones will take their place.

an “incredible drone show” will return to the 2024 Renton River Days lineup and will take the place of the Fourth of July fireworks show.

Past coverage: Renton鈥檚 Fourth of July show to light up the sky without fireworks

According to the city, fireworks shows weren’t healthy for the environment and the noise was hard on pets. The city also cited the funds needed to source a barge with the upgrades to the North Water Walk as one of the reasons for the change.

On Monday, 成人X站 Newsradio personalities shared their thoughts on the shift from fireworks to drones on “成人X站 Nights.”

成人X站 Newsradio traffic reporter Chris Sullivan said while drones are great, he needs fireworks for the Fourth of July.

Others agreed, saying you can’t hear drones like you can fireworks.

成人X站 Newsradio producer Joe Wallace said he talked with the which is trying to preserve the fireworks tradition.

“Drone shows are unique and they can make crazy, interesting, patterns that are intricate but they are so anticlimactic because it just takes so long for them to set up,” Wallace said.

“There’s no sound. If you use it like Seattle did last year, they did both and that was cool,” he continued. “But yeah, I don’t think replacing firework shows with drone shows is going to have a lasting effect.”

Jake Skorheim, host of “成人X站 Nights,” said he wants his kids to remember Fourth of July holidays by the fireworks.

“I want my kids to associate Fourth of July (with fireworks) because I’ll tell you what. At my house, we’re going to be blowing stuff up and my kids are going to remember it every single year,” Skorheim said.

“In Snohomish County, when it’s Fourth of July, you know it because people are exploding things. And they’re proud of their country and we love it,” he continued. “And then someday my kids are going to look back and go, ‘Oh my gosh, those memories are literally burned into my brain because we’ve been around fireworks for so long.'”

成人X站 Nights: Hyper sexual zombie cicadas?!

However, the effect of fireworks on veterans with PTSD was brought up.

Skorheim said a lot of veterans listen to “成人X站 Nights” and they would “probably not say I’m really hankering for a drone show.”

“I bet most of them are saying you know what? I’d like a fireworks show with my kids,” he said. “And I’d like them to see how great America is.”

Wallace said, unlike dogs, veterans know how to avoid a fireworks show if needed.

“But how do you avoid it?” asked 成人X站 Newsradio traffic reporter Nate Connors.

“Go to Renton,” Sullivan responded.

成人X站 Nights: Hyper sexual zombie cicadas?! /kiro-nights/kiro-nights-hyper-sexual-zombie-cicadas/3957033 Wed, 10 Apr 2024 00:10:23 +0000 /?p=3957033 The two parts of the United States aren’t just plentiful, they’re downright weird.

These insects are the strongest urinators in the animal kingdom with flows that put humans and elephants to shame. They have pumps in their heads that pull moisture from the roots of trees, allowing them to feed for more than a decade underground. They are rescuers of caterpillars.

And they are being ravaged by a sexually transmitted disease that turns them into zombies.

Inside trees are sugary, nutrient-heavy saps that flow through tissue called phloem. Most insects love the sap. But not cicadas — they go for tissue called xylem, which carries mostly water and a bit of nutrients.

And it’s not easy to get into the xylem, which doesn’t just flow out when a bug taps into it because it鈥檚 under negative pressure. The cicada can get the fluid because its outsized head has a pump, said University of Alabama Huntsville entomologist Carrie Deans.

The tale of a local hero and his machete /kiro-nights/the-tale-of-a-local-hero-and-his-machete/3952298 Mon, 26 Feb 2024 20:50:11 +0000 /?p=3952298 The weapon of choice might be vintage, but it’s as effective in modern times as ever, at least for one Tacoma store owner.

Seventy-year-old Nafi Quatamin owns the Salena One Market in Tacoma. Like many small stores in the area, his market has been targeted for robbery.

“A guy walks into the store and says he is going to rob me,” Quatamin told Jake Skorheim on 成人X站 Nights. “I say not with that knife. Then I pulled out my machete.”

He purchased the machete to fend off would-be burglars about a year ago. It turned out to be a wise decision, as on February 5, Quatamin was minding the shop when a man pulled a knife on him and attempted to rob the cash register. However, he stood his ground and wielded a machete to defend his livelihood.

“The police found him behind the Bates College down there,” Quatamin said. “They recognized him and took him to the jail. It was about 9:30 in the morning and they released him at 7 in the evening, and told him to go home and be nice.”

Background story: Store owner prevents robbery by bringing a machete to a knife fight

He said that wasn’t the last he would heard from the robber.

“He came to the store again and said ‘I’m gonna come back and rob you again and kill you.'” Quatamin said. “I recognized him and said, ‘Are you serious?’ He said ‘Yes, I’m coming back.'”

Quatamin said he hit them in the chest. Customers held him down until the authorities came.

“This time, the police said he needed help. They took him to the hospital instead.”

For Skorheim, this recalled a popular 80s action comedy:

Skorheim: ‘I’m not going to give my kids a smartphone’ /kiro-opinion/jake-skorheim-wont-give-his-kids-a-smart-phone/3944010 Thu, 21 Dec 2023 22:03:39 +0000 /?p=3944010 With the holidays approaching and gifts being stuffed under Christmas trees, one present becomes an annual debate between parents and children graduating from elementary to middle school — when to get your kids a smartphone.

For Jake Skorheim, host of 成人X站 Nights, his kids won’t be able to own a smartphone at all.

“I think it’s very dangerous to give kids smartphones at too young of an age,” Skorheim said. “And I think most people can probably agree that a smartphone, when you’re talking about a little kid, is a bad idea. I’m not going to give my kids a smartphone.”

More on pushback against phones: Schools clash with parents over bans on student cell phones

Instead, he and his wife would allow his kids to own a “dumb phone” — a cellular device that’s more feature-rich than flip phones from the 1990s without giving access to social media, gaming and surfing the web, among other things.

“The basic idea is, if you’re going to leave and you’re in the car, and maybe you didn’t want to break down somewhere so you might need help. Or maybe you were going to a friend’s house and you wanted a quick easy way for parents to check in with you, then you would have this phone to call them,” Skorheim added. “That’s the point of a phone.”

According to聽, 42% of kids have a phone by age 10. By age 12, it鈥檚 71%. By 14, it鈥檚 91%. Groups have formed in response to these trends, like , a parent group that aims to help parents in a school community band together with a pledge that they won鈥檛 give their kids smartphones until they鈥檝e reached the eighth grade.

“Phones have morphed into what they have morphed into, which essentially is this device that sits in your pocket, listens to you all day and then tries to feed you advertisements and invites you to share your every thought and whim and desire with the entire world on social media,” Skorheim said. “When I think back to when I was a teenager and when I was growing up, the worst thing you could have given me is a platform to speak to the world because I didn’t know what my thoughts were. I didn’t know the repercussions of the things that I found funny at the time.”

A helpful tool that has been in development over the last couple of years is parental controls. Smartphones can offer parents the ability to limit access and phone use through parental controls.

Still, found that most parents (45%) want their kids to wait until they’re between the ages of 12 and 14 to have their first phone.

Additionally, social media is one of the earliest birthday-contingent milestones a child has the ability to accept, with most social media platforms requiring users to be 13 or older.

More from Jake Skorheim: How do you feel about WSDOT鈥檚 $10M bathrooms?

“If I hand this over to my kids, this incredible power that is a smartphone, if they’re not ready to wield that power, then I’m not being a very good parent,” Skorheim said. “It’s not safe for them to have access to the things that are on a phone.

“If they’re at a certain age where they’re responsible enough to understand the power of what they have in just in their pocket, all right then,” Skorheim continued.

Skorheim: How do you feel about WSDOT’s $10M bathrooms? /kiro-opinion/skorheim-wsdot-10m-dollar-bathrooms/3942097 Thu, 07 Dec 2023 23:30:22 +0000 /?p=3942097 I saw a story the other day about how the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says the agency needs (Wow!) to fix the 47 aging rest stops throughout the state.

Anytime we talk about WSDOT and money (often over budget), two things seem to happen. First, the numbers for WSDOT projects are always so astronomically huge that I rarely notice them anymore. Second, my eyes immediately begin to glaze over and I start to fall asleep from sheer boredom. But now I’m thinking that’s exactly what they want us to do. They want us to go to sleep and not ask any questions.

More from Jake Skorheim: Winter is coming. Let the battle of the thermostat begin!

Let’s take a look at this $500 million that they say they’ll need in order to upgrade the current rest stops. How much is that going to be per rest stop? I’m no mathematician,聽 but I do have a calculator app on my phone. And that number is (drumroll please)…$10,638,297 PER REST STOP! WSDOT says they will take 15 years to do all this work, but still, that number seems generous to me.

Does that seem crazy to anyone else? How on God’s green earth can you spend almost $11 million on a bathroom and a stretch of grass for your dog to relieve itself? Couldn’t they just spend, maybe, half on these rest stops? Bring them in at $5 million each and call it a day? That would still be about $250 million for the 47 rest stops and seems like it should be more than enough.

Gourd named ‘Michael Jordan’: Giant world-record pumpkin seeds sell for how much?

WSDOT spokesperson Tina Werner recently told , “It has been 15 years since this last strategic plan was updated, and 15 years ago, the needs of our travelers were different.”

How are the “needs” different? I’ve been using these rest stops for much longer than 15 years and without going into too much detail, I’ll tell you I’m doing the same thing in them now that I was doing back then.
