Rantz: Seattle mimics DOGE, cuts parks jobs. Where’s the breathless outrage?

When the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cut jobs and programs tied to our parks and forests, Democrats screamed (and choreographed) their outrage. When the city of Seattle set up the same kinds of cuts, there’s been hardly a peep.

Staff and programs with Seattle Parks and Recreation are on the verge of being cut dramatically to help address a $250 million budget deficit.聽KING 5 that hundreds of environmental education programs, volunteers, and employees have already been cut from the budget. Some staffers fear even more cuts are coming and are leaving their positions early.

Additionally, the city of Seattle is looking to privatize some of the programs in order to save them from being completely cut, according to the report.

Cue the outrage from members of Congress and lawsuits filed to stop the cuts. Oh, wait. That’s not happening. Outrage, apparently, is reserved for cuts by DOGE and the Trump administration.

Why isn’t there mass opposition to Seattle park cuts?

Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) trotted out after human prop to from the federal government. The media highlighted these stories, too, pretending聽no one聽should ever be cut and amplifying the struggles of people who, in some cases, only held a federal government job for a few weeks.

Meanwhile, lawsuits were filed to stop the layoffs with judges eager to use their bench to dictate federal policy.

The message? There’s no reason to cut any jobs, even though the U.S. faces an untenable deficit. Government waste? What government waste? Every federal job is important. Without these workers, no one will be able to unlock bathrooms, clear trails, or empty trash bins! Disaster would be imminent (well, the media and Democrats parsed their language: disaster聽could be聽imminent, meaning nothing bad could come of it, but they’d like to hype the negative).

Consistency

With the Seattle cuts, Mayor Bruce Harrell defended the budget decisions and said we still have聽辞迟丑别谤听programs residents can enjoy.

鈥淲hile we don鈥檛 want to minimize the impact of these reductions, we want to reassure residents that we remain committed to offering environmental education and outdoor learning opportunities,” the office said in a statement to KING 5. “SPR鈥檚 budget contains funding for five environmental learning positions, and programming would continue at Camp Long as well as programs operated by the Associated Recreation Council (ARC) at Discovery Park and the Creative Kids Preschool at Carkeek Park.鈥

To be clear, there’s nothing inherently wrong with Harrell’s move. Seattle is facing a serious deficit, and when you make necessary cuts, you will always end up losing something. But perhaps the Democrats (and their media allies) who understand the budget decisions in Seattle could strike the same tone and offer the same understanding when it happens at the federal level, where the deficit crisis is far more serious.
