Fed greenlights plan to address Hanford radioactive waste
The State of Washington and the U.S. Department of Energy have brokered a deal to address two Hanford storage tanks leaching radioactive waste: one has been leaking for nearly ten years.
The underground tanks hold leftovers from plutonium production on the Nuclear Reservation near Richland.
One part of the plan calls for barriers to prevent rain and snow melt from seeping into the tanks and pushing more waste out.
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates it will take at least 25 years for the toxic waste to reach groundwater near Hanford.

Tacoma mayor fined for campaign finance disclosure violation
The mayor of Tacoma is being fined by the Washington Public Disclosure Commission for failing to turn over her personal financial information in a timely fashion.
This is Mayor Victoria Woodard’s second violation of the law – so she’s been fined $500.
She failed to make the April 15th deadline last year as well, and the state says she has not yet paid that fine of $250.
Mayor Woodards tells The News Tribune she was focused on the “needs of her community” and not on filing the forms before the deadline.
King County designates pet cemetery historical landmark
The King County Landmarks Commission has voted to designate the Seattle-Tacoma Pet Cemetery in Kent as a historic landmark.
This is the third time the commission has taken up the matter.
It all started about a year-and-a-half ago, when people visiting the cemetery tried to get a large cellphone tower taken down.
Advocates say the designation will save the cemetery from future development.
