These outages can leave families without heat, lights, internet, and refrigeration for hours—or even days. Battery backup systems offer a reliable, seamless solution by instantly supplying power the moment the grid goes down, helping homeowners stay safe, comfortable, and connected.

Electrical Design Specialist: Power outages ‘disrupt lives’

“Power outages are more than just an inconvenience—they disrupt lives,” said Gaige Gray, Electrical Design Specialist at Home Comfort Alliance. “Our battery backup systems provide fast, silent, automatic power. It’s seamless and safe.”

Whether it’s keeping the HVAC running, the fridge cold, or lights on during a blackout, battery systems ensure your home remains functional no matter the weather.

Why use battery backups?

Battery backup systems are a smart investment for Washington homeowners, offering:

  • Unmatched reliability: Stay powered during outages caused by storms, downed lines, or infrastructure failures.
  • Energy independence: Reduce reliance on the utility grid and keep critical systems running when it matters most.
  • Year-round peace of mind: Ensure comfort and safety during extended outages—especially important for families with medical or remote work needs.
  • Cost efficiency: Avoid expensive peak utility rates by using stored power when energy prices are highest.

Home Comfort Alliance gives homeowners an advantage

Home Comfort Alliance goes beyond simply installing a system—it provides long-term peace of mind. The company’s licensed electricians handle everything: consultation, system design, permitting, installation, and ongoing support.

“We’ve seen these systems change lives—especially for families that experience frequent outages or rely on medical equipment,” Gray said. “This isn’t just backup power. It’s about protecting your home and your peace of mind.”

Battery backup is more than a convenience—it’s a smart investment in resilience, comfort, and control. Home Comfort Alliance helps residents stay powered through whatever the Pacific Northwest weather brings.

State Roofing and Exteriors unveils rebrand, expands presence with new offices in Western WA /sponsored/state-roofing-exteriors/4072900 Thu, 17 Apr 2025 22:14:37 +0000 /?p=4072900 For more than five decades, State Roofing has been a trusted name for homeowners across Western Washington. Now, the company is launching a bold new chapter—unveiling a refreshed identity as , along with the opening of new office locations.

“We’ve always been known for roofing, but our expertise has grown far beyond that,” said Justin Shirley, CEO of State Roofing and Exteriors, during an interview on the “Home Matters” podcast with Xվ Newsradio and KTTH. “We’ve been building decks, installing windows and siding, and transforming the exterior of homes across the region for years — now our name reflects the full scope of what we do.”

While roofing remains the cornerstone of the company’s business, Justin emphasized the rising demand for comprehensive exterior solutions.

“Last year alone, we completed over 750 residential roof installs — but that was only part of the picture,” Justin said. “We also completed countless decking projects, siding installations, window replacements, and even some insulation work. Our rebrand is about helping homeowners see us as the all-in-one exterior partner we’ve always been.”

A full range of services

Many homeowners are still discovering the breadth of what the company offers. Justin shared a recent experience that underscores the value of making that message clear.

“A customer came in asking about roofing,” he recalled. “When they saw our showroom and samples, they asked, ‘Wait — do you also do decking?’ And I told them, absolutely. We’ve done decking for decades. The conversation quickly turned into a full exterior consultation. They wanted us to look at their siding and windows too. That’s exactly why this rebrand is so important — people deserve to know everything we can help them with.”

That mindset shift also brings up another important factor for homeowners: financing.

“Most of the homes we work on are older, and when you’re looking at your roof, you’re often noticing other areas that need attention too — like the siding, or the windows,” Justin said. “Rather than stretching out multiple projects over several years, many families prefer to bundle everything together and get it done at once. We work closely with trusted banks and financing partners to help make that possible.”

New offices in Snohomish and Pierce Counties

The rebrand also comes with major growth. After decades of calling Monroe home, State Roofing and Exteriors has expanded its footprint with a new corporate office and showroom in Tacoma, along with a second office now under construction in Marysville.

“Monroe will always be part of our story, but we’ve grown beyond what that single location can support,” Justin said. “In January 2023, we opened a beautiful showroom and office in Tacoma. It’s fully staffed, open from 8 to 6, and ready for anyone who wants to walk in, talk with our team, and explore options for their home.”

The Marysville office, located just off 88th and State Avenue, will serve as the northern hub for the company.

“Even without signage up yet, we’re seeing people come in just from recognizing our trucks,” Justin shared. “It’s exciting to see that kind of trust already building in the community.”

With a strong presence now covering both the north and south ends of Western Washington, the company is well-positioned to serve homeowners from Vancouver to the Canadian border — and everywhere in between.

“From Tacoma, we can serve the South Sound and even reach over to the Peninsula,” said Justin. “And Marysville gives us coverage across Snohomish, Skagit, and beyond. It’s all part of our goal to be the most accessible and dependable exterior contractor in the region.”

Looking ahead

As State Roofing and Exteriors steps into this new era, the mission remains the same: to deliver exceptional service, high-quality craftsmanship, and lasting solutions that homeowners can count on.

“This rebrand isn’t just about a name change—it’s showing our customers that we’re able to provide a solution for all their exterior needs,” said Justin. “We’re proud of our history, and even more excited about what’s ahead. Whether it’s roofing, siding, windows, or decking, we’re here to help homeowners protect and improve the place they call home.”

With expanded services, new showrooms, and a continued focus on trust and integrity, State Roofing and Exteriors remains committed to being held to a higher standard since 1968—and that promise continues to guide everything they do across Western Washington.

Fighting hunger together: Safeway’s, Albertsons’ Nourishing Neighbors program tackles food insecurity /sponsored/fighting-hunger-together-safeway-albertsons-nourishing-neighbors-program-tackles-food-insecurity/4017009 Tue, 17 Dec 2024 21:05:30 +0000 /?p=4017009 Food insecurity is a pressing issue that affects several thousands of people in Washington. In response to this challenge, 10 years ago, Safeway and Albertson’s launched the program. This initiative aims to ensure everyone, including children, seniors and families, has access to nourishing food every day.

History of Nourishing Neighbors

Nourishing Neighbors reflects Safeway’s commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity. Since its inception, the program has implemented various initiatives to combat hunger. These include funding breakfast programs for children, providing summer meals, connecting families to federal nutrition programs and supporting school pantries. The program also focuses on holiday dinners and weekend backpack programs, ensuring children have food to take home when school is not in session

In 2023 alone, Nourishing Neighbors helped provide more than 40 million meals to those in need. The program also donated gift cards to 250,000 families, allowing them to purchase food for the holidays, and pledged $9 million in grants aimed at addressing the root causes of hunger.

Why give to the program?

Supporting the Nourishing Neighbors program is crucial for several reasons.

One of those reasons is addressing immediate needs. Donations help provide immediate relief to those struggling to put food on the table. This includes funding for meals and groceries that can make a significant difference in the daily lives of individuals and families. Another reason is supporting long-term solutions. Beyond immediate relief, donations support long-term solutions to food insecurity. This includes grants for innovative programs that tackle the underlying causes of hunger, such as poverty and lack of access to nutritious food.

The program also positively impacts the community. By donating, individuals can contribute to the well-being of their local communities. Nourishing Neighbors works with local nonprofits and community organizations to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most. This localized approach helps build stronger, more resilient communities. The program especially focuses on empowering children and families. Ensuring that children have access to nutritious food is essential for their growth and development. Programs funded by Nourishing Neighbors, such as school breakfast and summer meal programs, help children thrive academically and physically.

Lastly, supporting Nourishing Neighbors encourages volunteerism. Donations also support volunteer initiatives, encouraging community members to get involved and make a difference. The program’s Million Hour Volunteer Rally, for example, mobilizes volunteers to support local nonprofits and neighbors in need.

The program is a vital initiative in the fight against food insecurity. By addressing both immediate needs and long-term solutions, it plays a crucial role in ensuring that everyone has access to nourishing food. Donations to this program not only provide essential support to those in need but also help build stronger, more resilient communities. As we continue to face the challenges of food insecurity, programs like Nourishing Neighbors remind us of the power of collective action and the importance of supporting our neighbors.

Please note, this section is 18 years and up and may contain instances of nudity and violence.

‘Multimedia: Beyond the Printed Page’

Finally, the last section, “Multimedia: Beyond the Printed Page,” reflects on how the influences of graphic narratives are infused in other mediums, including television, fashion, cinema and more.

Fandom and community are the pillars of Asian comics, and fans continue to recreate the stories and characters through cosplay, campaigns and more.

Inside the space, the museum encourages guests to explore various interactive opportunities, including a reading station filled with manga anthologies, a replica of Takashi Fukutani’s studio and a motion-capture installation that invites visitors to control a building-sized construction robot, reminiscent of the renowned mecha robots from 1980s and 1990s manga.

Other display moments highlight anime and manga-inspired cosplays by local artists, such as Kitkatwombat, creator of the “Yukari Hayasaka” cosplay from “Paradise Kiss,” and Stephanie Piper, creator of the “Oscar François de Jarjaye” cosplay from “The Rose of Versailles.”

For our music fans, there will be a broadcast performance of Hatsune Miku — a virtual pop star who began as a piece of vocal synthesizer software but has since transformed into a multimedia phenomenon, appearing in manga, anime and as an animated hologram.

‘Preventing the preventable:’ Most effective ways to protect your home from water damage /sponsored/most-effective-ways-to-protect-your-home-from-water-damage/3993834 Thu, 24 Oct 2024 18:15:48 +0000 /?p=3993834 Water damage stands as one of the most common and costly claims that homeowners face, accounting for nearly a quarter of all homeowners insurance claims. Beyond the immediate financial burden, water damage can displace families for weeks or even months, necessitating stays in hotels and leading to additional costs and discomfort. Furthermore, untreated water loss can result in long-term health and safety risks, affecting everything from structural integrity to air quality in your home.

Unlike other types of claims, water damage is often preventable. With a proactive approach, homeowners can mitigate the risks associated with water loss and safeguard their properties.

Steps to preventing water loss

There are three steps homeowners can take to prevent water loss.

Maintaining your home

The first is maintaining your home. Regular maintenance of your plumbing system and appliances is one of the simplest yet most effective strategies to prevent water damage. Small, routine actions can significantly extend the life and efficiency of your plumbing fixtures and appliances.

For example, test your sump pump. If you have a sump pump, ensure it’s functional by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit before the rainy season begins. Consider installing a sump pump alarm that can notify you of potential failures, even when you’re not home.

Also, inspect your water heater for corrosion, leaks or sediment buildup. Draining and flushing your water heater at least once a year can enhance its efficiency and longevity. Maintaining your gutters and downspouts is also key to a healthy home. Clear your gutters and downspouts biannually to prevent water from pooling around your foundation.

Regularly replace any damaged hoses, seals or washers in your faucets, toilets and appliances. Experts recommend using stainless steel braided hoses for their durability. Lastly, adjust your landscaping. Remove bark mulch from near your foundation, as it can retain moisture and invite pests and consider using gravel or decorative rock instead, which allows for better drainage and adds an extra layer of fire protection.

Monitoring your home

The second step is monitoring your home. You can do this by implementing monitoring devices that can help you detect water issues early, reducing potential damage and even lowering your water bill.

Also, water leak sensors. These smart devices alert you to moisture presence and can connect to automatic shut-off valves to stop water supply during a leak. Ideal locations for these sensors include washing machines, water heaters and dishwashers.

Inspecting your home

The third and final step is inspecting your home. Keeping a vigilant eye on your house and water bill can help you identify potential issues before they escalate into disasters. Look for water stains on walls and ceilings, musty smells, low water pressure or unusually high water bills.

Also, check your water meter. If you suspect a leak, examine your water meter. If the flow indicator is moving while no water is being used, it could signal a leak.

And, inspect critical areas.Regularly check your roof and foundation for cracks, inspect toilets for silent running and consider replacing plastic washing machine hoses with more robust alternatives.

What if you encounter a water leak?

If you find water damage, prioritize safety. Turn off the power to your house if there’s a risk of electrical hazards and shut off your main water supply to stop any further damage. Soak up excess water with towels and contact an insurance provider, like , for assistance with next steps.

Upon filing a claim, an adjuster will be assigned as your point of contact, and it’s advisable to engage a water mitigation specialist to assess the damage. In many cases, coverage for mitigation efforts can be authorized on the spot.

Over the past six years, the annual costs associated with water damage claims have risen significantly. The long-term impacts of water damage can be severe, leading to prolonged repairs, uncovered expenses and disruptions in daily life.

is committed to educating homeowners about the various causes of water damage, from frozen pipes to leaking appliances. By taking preventive measures, customers not only protect their homes but also contribute to a healthier insurance environment, potentially benefiting everyone in the policyholder community.

Plant today, protect tomorrow: Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust hosts fundraiser /sponsored/plant-today-protect-tomorrow-mountains-to-sound-greenway-trust-hosts-tree-planting-fundraiser/3991251 Wed, 02 Oct 2024 18:30:05 +0000 /?p=3991251 As the vibrant hues of autumn blanket the Pacific Northwest, the is poised for a transformative season. Between October 1 and December 3, coinciding with Giving Tuesday, the coalition-based organization is launching a tree-planting fundraiser, inviting individuals and businesses alike to invest in the future of their environment. For every $25 donated, a tree will be planted in the donor’s name, and thanks to , each contribution will be doubled.

The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust is a local nonprofit dedicated to conserving and enhancing the Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area — a sprawling 1.5 million acres stretching from the Seattle Waterfront along the I-90 corridor to the Cascade Mountains. Established nearly 35 years ago by a passionate group of citizens who recognized the encroaching threat of urban development, the Greenway Trust has played a crucial role in protecting this unique blend of natural, cultural and historic resources.

“The Greenway promotes a healthy and sustainable relationship between people and the land by preserving a balance between built and natural environments,” Greenway Trust’s . “The Greenway landscape provides places for nature and wildlife, for culture and tradition, for outdoor recreation and education, for working forests and local agricultural production, while embracing vibrant urban areas.”

This year marks a significant milestone for the nonprofit, having planted one million trees and shrubs after 30 years of work.

Why planting trees matters

Tree planting is more than just a symbolic act; it has far-reaching implications for climate, communities and wildlife. Did you know a small tree at just a year old allows six people to breathe for an entire day? According to , that same tree produces 12 pounds of oxygen and has the cooling effect of five air conditioners working for 20 hours. This cools urban areas, enhances soil carbon storage and supports biodiversity — making trees essential in the fight against global warming.

According to Greenway Trust Executive Director Jon Hoekstra, trees also filter out pollutants and help keep the rivers healthy for salmon. Planting trees ensures cleaner waterways and thriving ecosystems.

“Trees create shade,” Hoekstra said. “They help reduce your energy bills and the urban canopy reduces the urban heat island effect. Trees also provide urban wildlife habitat for birds and other animals and they help clean the air and filter stormwater too.”

Trees are also vital for Washington’s economy, supporting jobs in forestry, recreation and tourism. Each tree planted contributes to the economic stability of local communities. Trees also holdsignificance for Indigenous tribes in Washington. Supporting tree-planting efforts honors these traditions and helps preserve cultural connections to the land.

Spending time among trees also reduces stress and improves mental health. Forests provide natural retreats that benefit our communities now and in the future.

“A walk in the woods is a great, great thing,” Hoekstra said. “We’re really lucky to have so much forest land close by our communities with so many trails and access points where you can get out into parks and open spaces. But even in town, we need trees, and we benefit from trees.

Hoekstra: ‘When you’re in nature, life is better’

He added that it doesn’t even need to be an entire forest, just one tree can make a difference.

“It doesn’t have to be a whole forest — even seeing just one tree still generates those mental health benefits for people,” Hoekstra said. “When you’re connected to nature, life is better.”

Hoekstra said he has always loved being outdoors, exploring nature and seeing wildlife. A biologist by training, he got started with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust because of the organization’s work to protect nature in the Seattle-area and beyond.

“They told me how this little organization was the reason we have so much green space — parks, trails and nature — almost before you leave town, and soon it opens up into the mountains,” Hoekstra explained. “I realized this little organization is why I love this place so much. It’s been an honor to be part of it and this amazing community of people from so many different walks of life who share a love of this place. Together, we can take action and make choices to protect and improve it for future generations.”

Contribute to tree-planting fundraiser

The time to act is now. As the effects of climate change become more pronounced, and urban areas continue to expand, the need for green spaces is greater than ever. Make a difference by participating in the tree planting fundraiser:

  • One tree: $25.
  • Four trees: $100.
  • Ten trees: $250.
  • An acre of trees: $10,000.

Every donation during this campaign will not only plant a tree in your name but will also double in impact thanks to Carter Subaru’s generous match. Since 2008, Carter Subaru has supported the Greenway Trust by helping to plant over 225,000 trees, underscoring the importance of community partnerships in environmental stewardship.

Join in a nature celebration

Mark the calendar for October 12, when the community will come together for the ! Integrating ‘good CHEE’ to create balance, comfort in your home /sponsored/home-comfort-alliance-integrating-good-chee-to-create-balance-comfort-in-your-house/3985829 Tue, 01 Oct 2024 19:34:16 +0000 /?p=3985829 Creating a home that embodies peace, comfort and a forward-looking sense of security is a goal many aspire to achieve. The Asian principle of Chi, or life force energy, offers timeless wisdom on how to cultivate such an environment. However, as we adapt these concepts to modern living, we find that true home harmony also involves the integration of comfort, health, efficiency and environmental impact — together forming the concept of “good CHEE.”

Understanding good CHEE

Good CHEE is an evolved interpretation of the ancient concept of Chi, where the focus is on creating a home that not only feels harmonious but also supports the well-being of its occupants and the planet. It stands for:

  • Comfort — The physical and emotional ease provided by a well-designed living space.
  • Health — The wellness benefits derived from a clean, safe, and nurturing home environment.
  • Efficiency — The smart use of resources, ensuring energy savings and reducing waste.
  • Environmental impact –The responsibility to minimize our home’s footprint on the planet.

When these elements are in balance, they create a space where one can truly thrive, free from the anxieties of future uncertainties.

Comfort: The foundation of good CHEE

Comfort is the cornerstone of any home. It’s about creating a space that feels like a sanctuary — a place where you can relax, rejuvenate and feel at ease. Achieving comfort goes beyond just physical aspects like temperature control and furniture arrangement; it also encompasses emotional comfort. A home with good CHEE is one where the energy flows smoothly, with minimal clutter or waste, allowing for a peaceful and calming atmosphere.

Incorporating elements such as proper furniture placement, use of natural light and inclusion of nature-inspired elements like plants, can enhance the flow of positive energy, promoting overall comfort.

Health: A vital component of good CHEE

A healthy home is crucial for a high quality of life. Good CHEE promotes health by ensuring the indoor environment is free from toxins, allergens and other harmful elements. This involves choosing eco-friendly materials, maintaining proper ventilation and controlling humidity levels to prevent mold growth.

Additionally, incorporating natural elements like air-purifying plants, using low-VOC paints and ensuring that your home’s air and water quality are optimal are essential practices for a healthy living space.

Efficiency: The smart use of resources

In the realm of good CHEE, efficiency is about making the most of what you have while minimizing waste. This involves optimizing your home’s energy use, which not only reduces utility bills but also lessens your environmental footprint. Energy-efficient appliances, proper insulation and the use of low-impact energy sources like solar panels and heat pumps are all ways to enhance the efficiency of your home.

Moreover, smart home technologies can further improve efficiency by automating climate control, lighting and even water usage, ensuring that your home is operating at its best without unnecessary energy expenditure.

Environmental impact: Responsibility toward the planet

The environmental impact of our homes is an increasingly important consideration. Good CHEE encourages the use of sustainable materials and practices that reduce the negative effects on our planet. This includes everything from choosing sustainable building materials to implementing recycling programs within your home.

By minimizing waste, conserving water and reducing energy consumption, you contribute to the larger goal of environmental stewardship. A home that is mindful of its environmental impact is not only better for the planet but also creates a sense of pride and peace for its occupants.

Design a better world: Local university offers video game, AI and UX design degrees /sponsored/northwest-university-offers-video-game-ai-and-ux-design-degrees/3984466 Tue, 10 Sep 2024 19:32:44 +0000 /?p=3984466 Have you ever dreamed of designing new technology or a brand new video game, producing music for top artists or leading the way in artificial intelligence? (NU), nestled in Kirkland, is a regionally accredited Christian institution dedicated to helping individuals establish themselves in a variety of careers.

One of NU’s standout offerings is Creatio, a hub for students aiming to excel in entertainment, technology and design. Creatio provides hands-on learning with small class sizes and experienced professors and instructors with deep experience working for local companies. View the Northwest University Creatio video .

Craig Chapman, Dean of Creatio, emphasizes that job placement rates are strong among their graduates, with many securing roles in various companies across the Pacific Northwest. He notes that each major is specifically designed to align with targeted career paths, with a strong emphasis on practical career development.

Chapman noted that one of the most significant impacts of Creatio has been through its music production program, where students have gone on to become performers, recording artists and technical directors at churches.

“They’re getting jobs in the real world,” he told MyNorthwest. “They’re doing great things.”

A software engineer with 35 years of software development experience, including a decade of experience at Microsoft before founding his own tech company, Chapman helped launch Creatio’s technology design programs and established it as a distinct school within NU five years ago.

“It’s really hard to find good designers,” he said. “While engineers are not easy to find, there are even fewer designers — especially those skilled in user interface or product design, creating products that work well for people.”

NU is one of only two universities in the state, alongside the University of Washington, to offer a UX design program. Chapman explained that Creatio’s mission is to teach students how to build, design, record, code and film a better world.

“Our tagline might be catchy, but it’s rooted in our true goal: to train individuals in various fields, whether they’re designing software for businesses, cars, or video games, or perhaps writing music or making videos,” Chapman said. “We aim to leave the world better than we found it by helping students become outstanding designers, engineers, and technologists.”

Chapman shared that one of his favorite parts of his role is witnessing students’ enthusiasm as they discover their passion and watching their progress from the beginning of the program through to graduation.

“It’s really fun and rewarding,” he added.

He also noted that Creatio is launching a new master’s degree in applied artificial intelligence, starting in January. Unlike traditional programs, this degree focuses on practical applications of AI.

“We’re the first university in the area that I’ve seen offering applied AI,” Chapman said. “We’ll train you to apply AI in your current profession or help you transition into a new career, regardless of your background.”

For those interested in applying, Chapman mentioned that NU’s AI program does not require a deep technical background in software development or model design.

“All you need is the desire to advance your career in one of today’s most in-demand fields. Everyone is eligible,” he said.

Isolation to connection: Recognizing the signs to put your seniors into safe care /sponsored/isolation-connection-recognizing-signs-senior-living/3960452 Thu, 11 Jul 2024 14:00:58 +0000 /?p=3960452 As our loved ones age, it’s crucial to recognize the signs that indicate they may need additional support and care. The transition to a senior living community can be a positive step toward ensuring their safety, health and happiness.

Understanding the key indicators can also help us make informed decisions for their well-being. Here are six signs that suggest it might be time to consider the benefits of a senior home for your loved one:

  1. Medication errors:When seniors begin to miss doses or forget to take their medications altogether, it can lead to serious health complications. A senior living community offers medication management services to ensure that residents receive their medications correctly and on time, providing peace of mind for both seniors and their families.
  2. Poor nutrition:If you notice a loved one skipping meals, relying heavily on microwaved meals or showing signs of dehydration, it’s a clear indicator that nutritional needs are not being met. Senior living communities provide nutritious, chef-prepared meals, that cater to the dietary requirements of each resident.
  3. Falls: Frequent falls, whether known or mysterious and unexplained injuries are a significant concern for seniors living alone. Senior homes are designed with safety in mind, offering a secure environment that minimizes the risk of falls.
  4. Safety: When seniors exhibit behaviors such as exit-seeking or struggle with day-to-day tasks, it’s a sign that they may no longer be safe living alone. Senior living communities offer a secure setting where residents can receive the assistance they need.
  5. Isolation: Loneliness and withdrawal can have detrimental effects on a senior’s mental and emotional well-being. Senior living communities offer a vibrant social environment where residents can connect with peers and participate in various activities.
  6. Caregiver burnout: Caring for a senior loved one can be rewarding, but it can also lead to burnout, especially for family members. Senior communities provide professional care, giving family caregivers the respite they need.

Senior living has significant benefits

There are vast benefits to a senior home. One is that senior facilities offer an all-inclusive lifestyle that eliminates the worries of home upkeep and property taxes. Residents can enjoy their golden years without the burden of maintaining a home.

Social support is another benefit as interaction is vital for the well-being of seniors. Living in a senior community provides ample opportunities for social engagement and community involvement, ensuring that residents remain active and connected.

Other news: North Face closes downtown Seattle flagship store

“I’ve seen on numerous occasions someone coming from home that lived alone that moved in and the light came back into their eyes because they are developing friendships, partaking in activities, eating healthy food,” Amanda Kirilenko, Regional Director of Sales and Marketing of CarePartners Senior Living, told MyNorthwest.

Lastly, a major benefit is consistent medical support. Medical care and safety are paramount for seniors. Senior communities offer round-the-clock medical support and are equipped to handle various health needs, ensuring residents’ well-being.

Thinking about putting a senior in your life into a community? is a great place to go as it offers independent living, assisted living and memory care. CarePartners Senior Living has over 20 homes in Western Washington, making it convenient for everyone.

However, CarePartners Senior Living does not simply recommend a home based on where the senior lives. The company takes the time to get to know each person based on their hobbies, shopping habits and family locations. It then recommends a home based on each person’s needs.

Fans can attend the event’s third inning at Cheney Stadium on July 6. Hosted by Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, this year promises a blend of light-hearted competition and serious community support.

However, the game will feature a roster of celebrities from different walks of fame, all united for a common cause. While the full lineup is under wraps, in years past, the event has seen Seahawks players, local musicians and actors.

Past attendees include comedian Jeff Dye, Seahawks player DK Metcalf, Seahawks player Geno Smith and UFC Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, .

“It’s an honor to be hosting the 2024 Seattle All-Star Classic and to support local community organizations working to build a more equitable future,” Smith-Njigba . “I’m excited to take the field with my fellow athletes and community leaders from around the Pacific Northwest for a day of fun and giving back to our community.”

Beyond the diamond, the event is a home run for local non-profits. Thus, the proceeds will support initiatives in education, youth sports and family services. The initiative, now in its third year, has become a beacon of hope for those it serves, embodying the spirit of the Emerald City.

Seattle All-Star Classic highlights non-profits

The initiative, spearheaded by the SASC, is a powerful community-driven program designed to address and alleviate inequities in the South Sound and Tacoma areas. Therefore, this year, the program proudly highlights five non-profits that are making significant strides in critical areas. The program works to help non-profits overcome daily challenges. The initiative also focuses on bolstering awareness, volunteer support and fundraising to ensure these non-profits can continue their vital work in the community.

Therefore, attendees can expect more than just a softball game. Cheney Stadium will host an array of activities suitable for all ages. There will be a children’s play area, a beer and wine garden and a variety of local vendors showcasing the best of Seattle’s culinary scene.

Ensuring pet safety on the road with Saving Great Animals, Carter Subaru /sponsored/ensuring-pet-safety-on-the-road-with-saving-great-animals-carter-subaru/3954906 Mon, 01 Apr 2024 07:00:21 +0000 /?p=3954906 SPONSORED — When it comes to traveling with furry friends, pet safety is a top priority.

in Seattle, along with , outlined valuable tips to ensure four-legged family members are secure during car rides.

“We’re talking about all the different ways you can travel safely with your pet,” Lily, an advocate from Saving Great Animals said.

She demonstrated three safety options: a harness clip, a seatbelt harness and a crate.

Using harness clips for pet safety

The harness clip is a simple yet effective tool.

One end attaches to the dog’s harness, while the other clips into the seatbelt.

This method keeps the dog anchored, providing safety in the event of sudden stops.

Seatbelt harness: A dual-function

The seatbelt harness serves a dual purpose, acting as both a harness and a safety restraint.

“This is a seatbelt harness so it’s going to work like a normal harness would on a dog,” Lily said as she demonstrated.

The dog wears the harness and the car’s seatbelt goes under the back of the harness, ensuring the pet is safely strapped in.

Keeping your pet safe on the road using crates

“Another option to keep your dog safe while you’re traveling is to put them in the crate in the car,” Lily said.

For those who prefer crates, Lily noted the importance of making sure the crate is secure. She also said dogs should have their leashes on them while in the crate, just in case they try to jump out when the owner opens the door.

Comprehensive travel tips for pet safety

In addition to the methods shared by Lily, here are some comprehensive pet travel tips to consider:

Always make sure pets are safely restrained while traveling. Owners can even use a pet barrier to minimize distractions and enhance safety.

Pet owners should never leave animals unattended as cars can face extreme temperatures, leading to health risks.

Owners should also regularly stop on road trips to allow pets to stretch and take bathroom breaks.

Along with taking breaks, packing the necessities is vital. Therefore, owners should have food, water and anything their pet might need throughout the day.

If a pet gets lost, a collar with contact information and microchipping can help it to be returned.

Owners should also plan for emergencies and know the location of pet-friendly rest stops and veterinary clinics.

Along with pet safety, Saving Great Animals offers for pet owners.

The organization’s guide covers barking, basic training, common behavioral issues, crate training and fear and anxiety. It also offers resources for leash training, potty training, puppy training, separation anxiety, territorial behavior, impulse control and enrichment.

“We envision a future where every dog is valued and cherished, and where our rescue efforts inspire others to take action and make a difference in the lives of dogs in need,” .

Saving Great Animals said their mission is to ethically rehabilitate and re-home dogs.

“We are committed to ensuring that each dog finds the right forever home, by making thoughtful and informed matches between dogs and adopters in order to break the cycle of abandonment and to prevent dogs from re-entering the shelter system,” the organization’s website writes.

Right now, for adoption through Saving Great Animals. Zola the “cutest little pittie pup,” Romeo a “gorgeous shep boy” and Cotton a “sweet shy boy” are just a few.

As crime crisis worsens, locals get serious about personal safety /sponsored/as-crime-crisis-worsens-locals-get-serious-about-personal-safety/3937736 Fri, 03 Nov 2023 17:40:35 +0000 /?p=3937736 (SPONSORED) – Washington’s crime crisis continues to worsen, and locals are turning to whatever tools they can use to keep them safe.

Democrat policies that have emboldened criminals, including a ban on police vehicular pursuits, and soft-on-crime policies by prosecutors and judges has created an escalating crime crisis. Seattle is on pace to meet or exceed the city’s all time high number of homicides. Tacoma is seeing a surge in violent crime, particularly amongst youth. And from Thurston County into Snohomish County, car theft and break-ins continue to alarm local law enforcement.

As our communities become less safe, Washingtonians are turning to their Second Amendment rights to feel more secure. John Holschen of , a sponsor of the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH, understands what people are going through.

“As crime becomes more common it leads to a decrease in perceived safety and comfort,” Holschen told the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH. “It’s natural for people to want to take steps to secure their safety and that of their loved ones.”

Personal security can only be achieved when you’re safe

But Holschen notes that if you’re looking to enjoy your Second Amendment rights, you need to do so safely and responsibly.

For those who worry a safe will hinder quick access to protect oneself during a robbery, Holschen says it’s a myth that you have to sacrifice quick access for safe storage. offers a variety of storage options to fit individual needs.

But personal safety needs aren’t simply addressed by making a purchase. You need to develop skills on how to operate whatever purchase you make for personal safety. offers a number of small group training sessions for individuals of all different skill levels.

I recently took a refresher course since I already had some skills, but needed to hone in some forgotten skills. The class was small, so I got the attention I needed, and most of it was spent at the indoor range. I followed up with one private lesson, too. ensures you have the skills to actually hit what you’re aiming at.

“You can learn some of the above through diligent self-study but beware that the internet is full of incorrect information and bad ideas,” Holschen explained. “Training and guidance from professionally trained instructors is the best bet for you to learn the optimal way to do these things.”

Of course, it’s also important to know the law around personal protection and self-defense, which is offered at .

It’s unclear when we’ll see relief from the crime crisis. Law enforcement officials worry that if significant changes to law aren’t addressed by the state legislature, the problems will only worsen. Until then, for those of you who take your family’s safety seriously, is there for you.

Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer? What are my options? /sponsored/september-is-prostate-cancer-awareness-month/3925223 Thu, 31 Aug 2023 23:02:39 +0000 /?p=3925223 SPONSORED – September was Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, but this important message holds true. We encourage the men in our lives to be champions of their own health and to understand their potential risk of developing prostate cancer.

In 2023, the American Cancer Society estimates there will be about 288,300 new cases and about 34,700 deaths from prostate cancer. We know that for many men, having conversations around this sensitive topic may not be easy. However, it is important for men to understand their potential risk of developing prostate cancer, screening guidelines and the treatment options available.

One of the most crucial messages of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is the significance of early detection. Unlike many other cancers, prostate cancer often progresses silently, displaying no symptoms in its early stages. The power of early detection cannot be overstated, as it can substantially enhance the chances of successful treatments.

Several factors contribute to an individual’s risk of developing prostate cancer, including age, family history, race/ethnicity and lifestyle. Schedule a prostate health checkup. Discuss with your doctor and make an informed decision on when to begin regular screenings, such as the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE). These play an instrumental role in early detection.

If facing a prostate cancer diagnosis, it’s important to know there are several treatment options available. Choosing the treatment that is best for you can be overwhelming. Consider speaking to the doctors who specialize in each of the treatment options. This might give you a better perspective and understanding the treatments, success rates and side effects.

One of the most technologically advanced options is Swedish CyberKnife, offered right here in Seattle. It’s one of the shortest treatment courses, requiring only five treatment sessions, each lasting less than an hour. Unique to CyberKnife is the ability to adjust to patient movement during the treatment delivery. This motion tracking ensures radiation is delivered to the target while avoiding nearby critical organs. Being able to precisely and accurately deliver radiation makes a difference in terms of controlling cancer and reducing the risk of side effects.

Swedish CyberKnife is non-surgical, non-invasive and patients report better quality of life during and after treatment, compared with other options. Swedish CyberKnife physicians publish a 97% cure rate. Swedish has been offering the CyberKnife treatment in Seattle for over 10 years. During this time, Swedish CyberKnife has successfully treated over a thousand prostate cancer patients.

Whether it’s yourself, a relative, friend or loved one, we all know someone who may be at risk. This September, we’re bringing awareness to prostate cancer and encouraging treatment with Swedish CyberKnife. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is incredibly important to do your research about all prostate cancer treatments. We highly recommend reaching out to Swedish CyberKnife to see if treatment is an option for you. The dedicated staff is eager to provide information about CyberKnife and the steps to scheduling a consultation with one of their providers.

The truth about Gigs, Gs and other internet marketing jargon /sponsored/the-truth-about-gigs-gs-and-other-internet-marketing-jargon/3901565 Mon, 26 Jun 2023 23:09:28 +0000 /?p=3901565 By Dan Miller

SPONSORED — My phone runs on 5G. I also just saw a bunch of ads about “10G”. Is it twice as fast? Our local internet company, Ziply Fiber, just announced a 10 Gig plan. Is that the same?

If you’re confused by internet technologies and marketing jargon, you’re not alone. Here we break down the important differences so you can make an informed decision.

Gigabits/Megabits

Internet plans are marketed with speeds in Gigabits per second (Gbps) or Megabits per second (Mbps). The Gigabits (also known as Gigs) or Megabits indicate how much “stuff” (video, music, games, social content, emails) can get through at the same time.

Most residential customers are on plans between 50 Mbps and 1 Gig. “Gig-speed internet” means a plan offers a download speed of 1 Gigabit per second, or 1,000 megabits per second.

Upload/Download Speeds

A little-known fact is that most companies only list and market their download speeds, so if you see a cable internet provider listing 200 Mbps, for example, that’s only the download speed. However, the upload speed is equally important – it’s how fast you send things to the internet, like your image and voice on a video call – and it’s usually just a fraction of the download speed. When download and upload speeds are asymmetrical or uneven, you might hear people say that your video is frozen on a call, or the audio is cutting in and out, meaning your connection is likely causing problems.

Fiber-optic internet plans, like those from , are symmetrical, meaning they always offer the same upload and download speeds. This means better performance with no lag or buffering.

For the best internet experience, look for symmetrical upload and download speeds.

5G = 5th Generation Wireless

5G simply stands for 5th Generation and is the technology standard for broadband cellular networks today. When you see the “5G” symbol on your phone, it’s connected to your provider’s 5th Generation network.

The 5 doesn’t mean 5 times faster and doesn’t mean 5 Gigs. In fact, , the wireless carrier with the fastest 5G speed test for Q1 2023 had an average download speed of just 220.70 Mbps, a fraction of the speed consumers can access versus a typical gig-speed fiber plan.

10G = Network Name

There’s been a lot of marketing for this lately, but let’s be clear, unlike with 5G, 10G doesn’t mean 10th Generation because there was no 7G, 8G or 9G. It’s simply what a cable company named its network.

At this point, internet service providers (ISPs) touting 10G are often alluding to speeds that are still in development and confusing the public about what speeds they can offer by making it sound like they have 10 Gig plans. In most areas, plans advertised on a cable 10G network currently top out at 1 Gig download with a much lower upload speed, because many of these networks run on older copper-based technology designed for sending TV signals and not the modern internet that a fiber-to-the-home network is designed for.

10 Gig = Ultra-Fast Speeds

If 1 Gig = 1,000 Mbps, then 10 Gigs = 10,000 Mbps. That’s the latest speed tier from Ziply Fiber, recently named Fastest ISP in the West , when they launched the region’s first 10 Gig fiber-to-the-home network in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

Residential fiber 10 Gig internet is brand new, and those who want to take advantage of its mind-blowing speed today are probably serious content creators. It also makes gaming and high-definition video streaming a blast.

What speed do I need?

Not everyone needs a 10 Gig or even a 5 Gig plan. Ziply Fiber’s are their fiber 2 Gig and 1 Gig plans, which offer ultra-fast, reliable, symmetrical upload/download connectivity to allow you to do everything you want online seamlessly across multiple connected devices.

If your needs are minimal, then a basic fiber plan like the 100/100, which offers 100 Mbps download and upload speeds, provides a quality connection suitable for checking email, browsing and streaming at a very affordable price.

Bottom line: on fiber-optic internet, you won’t experience aggravations like buffering wheels and peak-time slowdowns. And remember: not all “G”s are created equal.

Education that meets the needs of students, families /sponsored/education-that-meets-the-needs-of-students-families/3898826 Fri, 09 Jun 2023 22:30:02 +0000 /?p=3898826 SPONSORED – In Washington state, we have a robust program of online, tuition-free public schooling to accommodate students’ diverse interests, create a learning environment that fits their needs, and encourages students to explore all aspects of their academic passions – from arts to STEM.

One of the educational choices parents and students have is (WAVA). WAVA is a program of Omak School District that is a full-time online public school for students in grades K-12.

This innovative school model engages teachers, families, and students to be invested in inspiring and empowering students through an education experience tailored to every child’s unique needs.

Who We Serve

At WAVA, we’re dedicated to empowering every student through an education experience tailored to their needs so students learn in the ways that are best for them—at home, on the road, or wherever there’s an internet connection.

The populations served by online public schools are diverse, economically and culturally. A full 41% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 14% are special education students. Nearly 40% are students of color.

And, we know there are many reasons for the move to blended – online and in-person – education.

In rural parts of the state, which exist in all 39 counties, travel time to and from school can be lengthy, creating barriers for students to participate in extracurricular activities, such as a competitive sport or a theater or art program. For many families the cost of travel to and from school and extracurricular activities poses a financial burden on the family.

There are also parents looking for options for their children with different abilities, such as highly capable students and those with learning or physical challenges that make it difficult to attend an all-day, in-person classroom.

WAVA’s blended education model allows students to learn at their own pace while meeting deadlines to submit assignments, making the educational experience more adaptive to the student and more dynamic for their strengths and weaknesses.

It’s for these reasons, and so many more, we are seeing more families from all backgrounds seeking an alternative to in-person public school education.

Academic Excellence, Balanced with Student Endeavors

Across all grades, WAVA’s curriculum uses a blend of learning elements to accommodate multiple learning styles and maximize both the quality of lessons and the way they are delivered.

We have too many stories to recount that illustrate the dynamic and diverse educational opportunities students enrolled in WAVA are exposed to.

One such story is Eva Zamora-Kapoor, she is proof it’s never too young to find a passion. As a kindergartner, she took home the third-place prize in the Stride K12 national art competition with her artwork titled, “,” this year.

She said the represents the car of her dreams – an underwater ice-cream truck. It’s powered by a rainbow engine and it runs on a surfboard and delights sea creatures with its music.

She is a student at St. Thomas School in Medina, Wash., which is part of the Stride K12 hybrid public school educational model, allowing students to learn at their pace, explore through art and extracurricular activities, as well as attend in-person classes at their local public school.

It’s experiences like these, and so many more, that offer WAVA students opportunities that expand their minds and grow their creativity while learning the basics.

And, we offer clubs for students that highlight unique interests from art, baking, gaming, coding, student leadership, music, and more. WAVA has a Learning Coach Community designated to our families and provides ways to connect with others at our school geographically and in locations throughout Washington state by connecting through an online platform.

WAVA and its teachers and administrators understand that every student learns differently and has different passions, and this model of schooling celebrates those differences all while ensuring students get a quality and well-rounded education.

Preparing Students for a Lifetime of Success

WAVA offers online instruction through a variety of tools that include video, text, animations, interactive games, and chat.

We also establish partnerships that foster an environment that allows students to tailor their learning to their career pathway of choice.

With WAVA’s career preparation, students can use their middle and high school years to figure out where they want to go and how to get there.

In addition to core courses, they can take career-focused electives to explore their options and find their passion—all while earning their high school diploma in career pathways such as:

– Business
– Health & Human Services
– Information Technology
– Manufacturing: Engineering/Tech
– Marketing

This educational experience prepares students to dive into a career right out of high school or help them make the right decision about post-secondary education options and majors.

Open Minds, Open Opportunities

A WAVA education fosters an environment where educational excellence is priority and educational opportunities abound.

Allowing parents and students to work alongside WAVA teachers and administrators means academic buy-in. Together, we find the right combination where students get a quality education while experiencing the diverse activities that will shape their lives today and into the future.

This hands-on, tailored learning model has been a tremendous success for thousands of students across Washington state, building confidence and building bridges to future endeavors.

A WAVA education is one of endless possibilities, where learners — no matter who or where they are — can create, explore, and find their own path to success.

Enrollment is open now. To learn more about WAVA or to enroll a student, visit the .

Emergency planning for the worst-case scenario /sponsored/emergency-planning-for-the-worst-case-scenario/3872806 Thu, 08 Jun 2023 19:52:29 +0000 /?p=3872806 SPONSORED – What would you do if you woke up in the middle of the night and heard an intruder in your kitchen?

Life or death decisions shouldn’t be made in a split second, something an increasing number of United States citizens are becoming aware of. Per a 2020 FEMA poll, 48% of Americans stated that they have created an emergency plan. Are you one of them?

If not, let’s change that today, and if so, feel free to compare notes while you bask in the glory of your ultra-preparedness. We spoke to John Holschen of about things to consider when preparing for the most common emergencies you might face.

Consider the alarming danger of other people. John of West Coast Armory North poses the question, “If you look outside and see someone breaking into your car, what are you going to do?” Consider it.

None of us want to lose our things, especially at the hands of another person. Feeling rage upon seeing this would be a perfectly natural emotion, but people are unpredictable, and you shouldn’t react out of pure anger. Weigh the risk versus the reward. There have been far too many instances of confrontation leading to serious injury or even death. You need to ask yourself if you’re comfortable risking your life over material possessions. In any case, call the police right away.

Now suppose that trespasser upgrades to an intruder, meaning they have entered your home. This is really when fight or flight mode kicks in.

Get into the closest room that can be locked and barricaded, hopefully with your cell phone in hand so you can hastily call 911. The goal is to delay the intruders’ access to you until authorities arrive. Try to stay calm and quiet. Consider ahead of time how you want to defend yourself in case confrontation becomes unavoidable.

This is what John calls the “last-ditch plan.” When considering how to plan for physical confrontation, first ask yourself, am I Mike Tyson circa the 1990s? If the answer is no, you should consider defensive tools. This really comes down to what makes you feel the safest, as well as what you are most comfortable with.

For some, this means pepper spray, for others, a baseball bat near the bed. If you want to take your self-defense to the next level, West Coast Armory North has a wide range of options.

They also offer a variety of classes, so himself. He can teach you how to protect yourself, just in case you find yourself in need of a last-ditch plan.
