The media outlet added that, while current police response times average just over four minutes, drones could arrive in as little as 90 seconds.
Officials stress that drones won鈥檛 replace officers but will serve as a “force multiplier.” The pilot program will be funded through grants and will rely on community support beyond the initial trial.
Police said the drones wouldn鈥檛 be used for surveillance, immigration enforcement, or monitoring protests. They are not equipped with facial recognition, microphones, or speakers.
The city council approved the program in a 5-1 vote. In response, the department will maintain a public dashboard with flight data and incident information.
If the program is continued, each drone could cost up to $300,000 annually.
